July 4th Celebration at Maristhill

Our engaged community at Maristhill celebrated Independence Day with a fabulous barbecue on the patio.

Residents, their guests and our staff all enjoyed the sunny, warm day along with the fun!

Other activities this week included our regular exercise groups, summer crafts, and some wonderful entertainment by Tony Funches, formerly of the Platters, and performer Julie Zielski.

In addition, we all enjoyed a book signing and presentation by author N.S. Dolkart, who is also our Assistant Activities Director.

It seems there's always something happening at Maristhill!

First Glimpse of Maristhill's Completed Renovations

While, as you may know, the grand opening is scheduled for this Friday (June 17th, 4 - 6:30 pm), here's a first-glimpse of Maristhill's new entry way.

The renovations have included a new entry-way, lobby and sun room, complete with a large deck on the third level which will allow residents to more easily enjoy the sunshine and fresh air.

We'll share some additional photos after Friday's event, and also once the landscaping is completed. Can't wait!

Summertime on the Patio at Maristhill

Residents Ellen O’Neill and Lucila Cohen relax on the patio during an outdoor ice cream social at Maristhill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

The patio is an ideal place for residents and their guests to enjoy the sunshine and warm summer weather.

It seems like there's always something happening at Maristhill. In addition to our ice cream socials, cookouts, birthday celebrations, and gardening activities are also conducted on the patio. Movies, concerts, sporting events, bingo, family birthday celebrations and parties are among the many social and educational activities that Maristhill's active community of patients and residents regularly enjoy.

Camerata Vocal Group Performs at Maristhill

Maintaining high-levels of engagement and well-being among our residents and patients is important to all of us at Maristhill.

Among the any activities and events we were thrilled to welcome the Camerata Vocal Group, who performed here on May 16th.

Camerata is regarded as one of world’s best a Capella groups. They represent the best of the great Russian choir tradition. Their experiments with new forms and sounds make them totally different from other groups, and has brought Camerata admiration of audiences all over the world and at festivals of all music traditions.

“Their compositions are very special,” said one attendee. “Heavenly and human!”

An Intergenerational Earth Day at Maristhill Nursing & Rehabilitation Center

Children and elders collaborated to make Earth Day and Boston Marathon posters at Maristhill Nursing & Rehabilitation Center during an intergenerational program with St. Jude School.

Research has consistently shown that intergenerational activities are important to both the development of children and the quality of life of the elders.

Children bring noise—laughter, screams and giggles—and their physical presence completely changes the atmosphere, injecting enthusiasm, energy and youthful excitement. At the same time, residents are teaching the children about respect, understanding and celebrating other cultures.

Super Times & Super People!

Despite some challenging weather, many residents and team members enjoyed a fine time celebrating this year's Super Bowl!

Regardless of which team they were rooting for, people always enjoy gathering in a social setting, especially when there is a major happening such as the biggest game of the season.

Administrator Carolyn Fenn noted the high spirits, and extended a special thanks to all who made the extra effort to come to work during the stormy stretch of New England's winter.

"As we celebrated with a "Super bowl/Snowstorm" party today, it was not only how hard the staff worked to get here, but their attitude once they arrived – positive, proud, energetic, and cheerful – that really impressed me," she said.

"They truly embody the mission of our organization! In my opinion, all of our staff members are the "Champions" of our own Winter Super bowl!  Congratulations and thank you!!!"

And to All a Good Night

As noted in our previous post, we were expecting Santa to visit Maristhill earlier this month, which has been filled with activities, guests and more...

And true-to-form, Santa didn't didn't disappoint.

Residents and staff both enjoyed his visit, and as expected a fine time was had by all. Now we're looking forward to Wednesday's New Year's Eve party!

Naughty or Nice?

Everyone we know has been "nice" this year, and we're happy to tell you that Santa will be visiting Maristhill tomorrow (December 18th)!

Of course St. Nick's presence is just one of many events at Maristhill leading-up to Christmas Day...

Accordionist Eddie Marando will perform on the 21st, then our residents will attend geography lessons on the 22nd, and the Honky-Tonk Piano Man will entertain our community on Tuesday December  23rd.

A Christmas Eve sing-a-long will surely be a fun time on the 24th, and then it will be time to celebrate the holiday with family and friends.

It seems there's always something happening at Maristhill!

Maristhill Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Maristhill joined with the American Cancer Society in October to participate in “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer,” with events and fundraising throughout the month.

As an organization dominated by women (residents and staff!), many of us have been touched by this dreadful disease.  We started the month by dressing ourselves, our lobby, our trees and our signs “pretty in pink!"

A bake-sale with the pink theme was a big success – never have I seen so many pink confections in one place!!

On October 5th, the “Maristhill Pink Warriors,” led by Lori Savlon, our Human Resource Director, walked in the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” Boston event, raising $5,000 towards the cause on a beautiful fall day along the Charles River.

The month ended with a local “Making Strides” Luncheon held each year by the Orifice Family – this event typically raises between $18-20,000 per year in the fight against this disease.  Truly, it was an amazing month of teamwork and camaraderie.

Thank you for all your hard work, energy, and good humor above all!

As in previous years, the Marketplace fundraiser will take place on the last Friday and Saturday of the month, with the raffle drawing set to begin at 12:30pm on Saturday the 27th.
